The Saveetha Medical and Educational Trust was established in 1986 with the primary objectives of providing medical care, promoting education, and encouraging research. In 1988, the Trust founded Saveetha Dental College along with an affiliated General Hospital. Over time, the Trust expanded its reach by establishing a Nursing College, a Physiotherapy College, an Occupational Therapy College, and an Engineering College, all aimed at fulfilling its mission to serve the community, particularly those in rural areas around Chennai and nearby districts of Tamil Nadu.
To meet the requirements set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for “Deemed to be University” status, the Trust created the Saveetha Institute of Medical & Technical Sciences (SIMATS) in 2001. Later, in 2005, SIMATS was officially granted “Deemed to be University” status under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, by a Government of India notification (No. F.9-3/2002-U.3 dated 18-03-2005).
